2. Hex Hall - Rachel Hawkins

 This is another Good Reads recommendation that's been in my 'to read' list for a month or two. I'd never heard of the author, and so I was a little wary about reading it. After checking out the reviews on Amazon for it, I decided to just give it a shot. It's current price on Amazon (for Kindle) is 6.29 USD. Not too bad for a few hours of enjoyment.

"Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her." - Product description on Amazon.
**THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS SPOILERS**

Rating: 14+ again; some mentions of homosexuality, innuendo of sex, and some cursing. No more than what you (or your teen) would see on any show on the CW.
Overall Grade: A++ x infinity

In one word: Amazing. I really loved the fact that (to me) this novel is a completely fresh idea. Yes - there are YA books about schools for vamps, mutants, etc. But not a school for all types of paranormal teens that are 'delinquents'. What Sophie did to get put into this place wasn't too bad, in comparison to the things the other kids did. There are faeries, weres, shifters (no, I didn't say it twice; there are 2 different species that can change into an 'animal' (or animal like) form), warlocks, dark witches, white witches, and vamps. All in one school. I thought my high school experience was diverse, but I'm pretty sure these kids have me beat by a mile.

There are some stereotypical YA book elements in this book.
1. Girl is instantly disliked by the 'cool crowd'.
2. Girl falls for leader of cool crowd's boyfriend.
3. Girl befriends an outsider.
4. Mysterious death that leads new girl to do some digging.

I really could go on, but I won't. I've come to appreciate the stereotypical when it comes to this genre because the writing really does overshadow those small details in most cases. Because of the genre, you may be tempted to draw a comparison to Twilight; there's really no comparison. The cliffhanger at the end was so amazing,  I actually read the 2nd book right after I finished this one because I *couldn't* wait to find out what happened next. Expect to see the review sometime this coming week of book 2. Until then, happy reading!
